The Petrov Model

The PV-ATL learning process is designed in deliberate steps. Although there is no “magical” approach to the pole vault. We do keep it simple, for accelerated learning. Our teaching principles and technical model are a system that PV-ATL has developed over the past 18 years.

We spend a lot of time on fundamentals because the small details are important. The word "fun" is in fundamentals, and once we master the fundamentals, we improve & we have fun doing so!

We emphasize the teaching and coaching of the “Petrov/Bubka” Technical Model. We feel that this is the best approach to success in modern pole vaulting. As an instructional company founded by teachers & coaches, we have a deliberate approach to how we coach the children. Our practices are deliberately designed in steps which serve as a "outdoor classroom lesson."

The athletes do more than just pole vault at practice. They are taught about how to pole vault safely and efficiently to the best of their ability. The following lessons have been carefully developed to teach Excellence in the Pole Vault

Lesson #1: Plant Path and Proper Approach.

This lesson teaches the “plant path” and the proper formula for the best way to approach the box for take-off.  It is important to note that the material learned in the next two lessons is entirely dependent on what is learned in Lesson #1.

Lesson #2: Getting off the Ground.

This lesson uses the skills learned in Lesson #1 to make the proper take-off. This is where “Petrov/Bubka” Technical Model begins.

Lesson #3: Putting it all Together.

This lesson uses all the skills in the previous lessons to get the athlete over the cross bar. We try hard to get new students of the pole vault off the ground and over a practice “bungee” bar on the very first day of instruction.

Resources used by PV-ATL

PV-ATL believes Alan Launder's Beginner to Bubka and Dave Butler's The Pole Vault: A Violent Ballet are the two best resources out there! We also use many other resources from Track & Field News, ETrack, and coaches' insights from all levels of the pole vault!

PV-ATL has spent 20+ years reading and researching the technical aspects of the pole vault. Using these resources, PV-ATL has created a system that we implement for all of our vaulters & we feel it is a successful program for all levels!
